Independently publish a zine to spark a revolution within your community through self-expression and uplifting unheard voices

Can Zines cure depression? Can they help you find community? Can they maker you cooler? Can independent publishing offer you a respite in these trying times? The answer to all of these questions is YES. In this course, we will be examining the history and form of self-published zines while producing our own expressions of the art form. Over the course of 6 weeks, we will learn more about the revolutionary roots of independent publishing, and learn how to design and make physical and digital zines. If you’ve ever been curious about making a zine, or if you've experimented with the art form in the past but want to know more, this course is for you! The ideal candidate has experience using graphic design software such as adobe indesign, has rudimentary coding experience, and a desire to explore the outer reaches of independent publishing.

This course is designed to help you write cogent humor pieces, whoever you are. Too often, there’s a bias that writing comedy is for white cis men, and this course aims to create a space for everyone to feel like they have a seat at the table. We’ll go over everything from strong premises and joke-writing, to finding the best grain of an idea and maximizing it for comedic and narrative effect. There will be homework, critiques, guest-speakers, and the like as the course moves from introducing you to the skillset needed to write premise-based humor, to creating a respectful and safe space to workshop and develop your own writing.
