Pasta Metabolisms

In this workshop we will work with variations on traditional eggless, Italian pasta doughs to learn handmade pasta techniques. We will experiment with incorporating wild yeasts (i.e. sourdough) and less conventional flours to engage with themes of metabolics, exchange, and transformation. We will explore the poetic and sculptural potential of the material as a means to better understand the relationships between form, material, body, and landscape inherent to cuisine. The workshop will begin with a talk to orient materially and theoretically, then collectively make and shape the dough, and end the workshop by cooking and tasting our creations with dinner prepared by Adriana accompanied by a curated wine selection.

The goal is not to become an expert pasta maker, but to develop through practice a critical understanding of a kind of traditional labor and its embedded histories. Pasta, or any traditional food-craft, can serve to cultivate an awareness of labor that conditionally includes the landscapes and ecologies that produce the raw ingredients as well as the people who perpetuate the tradition and the surrounding culture. In making pasta, we can ask how engaging with traditional food-ways produces and re-produces relations between individuals or between humans and nature.

Matcha has exploded in popularity in the US in recent years, but its significance within Japan spans hundreds of years and is inseparable from the country’s rich history of tea production and consumption. In this class, guests will learn about that storied history and the evolution of Matcha through the present day. The traditional tools and methods of preparation will also be covered, with every guest learning how to whisk the perfect bowl of matcha themselves. This introductory class is great for those looking to explore Japanese tea for the first time and for those looking to travel deeper down the path of Matcha.

Ever wanted to learn how to print with the sun? Cyanoype is a printmaking technique using only UV rays and two chemicals to create deep-blue replicas of photographs, objects, or a combination of the two. We'll be going over the traditional processes while also playing with other techniques such as bleaching, toning, improvised collage, and more! You’ll walk away with your own handmade print and a new openness towards your creative practice. 

This event is for anyone who is interested in analog processes, low-tech printmaking, and ultimately experimenting with images to create something new. Happy accidents are encouraged and inevitable. Great for perfectionists and/or people who spend too much time on their computers who love to learn.
