George Nakashima (1905 – 1990) was an American woodworker, architect, and furniture maker, and was a key figure in the American craft movement. Nakashima was recognized for respecting the natural forms of trees, and would create furniture using pieces of wood with imperfections as in his opinion they reflected true beauty. Today, the foundation is run by his daughter, Mira Nakashima, who keeps the workshop going together with craftspeople and designers following Nakashima’s philosophy towards wood and furniture.

On this 2-hour guided tour of George Nakashima’s home, studio and workshop, we will stop at the Conoid Studio, Chair Shop, Showroom, Reception House, Arts Building, Lumber Shed, Pole Barn, and Finishing Room.

A few notes! Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from the foundation.

The Nakashima Foundation is requesting that everyone please bring a face mask, and wear easy-to-remove footwear as they may ask that shoes be removed before entering select buildings. The grounds include uneven terrain and grassy hills. If you are not feeling well, please stay home.

Children must be 12 years and older and accompanied by an adult.

Homes + studios is an archive of artists’ homes and studios and architectural gems around the world most of which you can visit.
