Join us for an introduction to soup as a vibe, a timeless kitchen staple, and an enduring symbol of mutual aid. Bring a vegetable to add to the pot and get ready to brush up on basic knife skills for this 2-hour workshop where you’ll learn the building blocks to season and scale up any soup. This interactive workshop is perfect for home cooks curious about food studies. Over a shared meal, you’ll get to know soup’s cultural and political legacies that have nourished masses, sustained protests, sparked memes, and offer us a recipe for collective liberation today.
Program
- Welcome & Introduction: What is soup? Everything!
Overview of soup lore, our communal recipe and materials. - Brief history of soup history in people’s movements.
- Soup as a symbol of survival. Easy to adapt to climate collapse and support climate justice in your kitchen.
- Knife safety tips and techniques: chopping, dicing, slicing, mincing demo. Broth base tips and flavor building basics.
- Cooking: add vegetables staggered in cook times.
- Prepare bowls and serving utensils. Slice bread.
Over soup, Q&A and final thoughts. - Share resources to learn more about mutual aid networks and understand food within a historical/political context.
Facilitator Bio
Leo Kirts is a food industry worker and freelance writer from Indiana based in New York. They cover food, queer politics, ecofeminism & veganism. They co-host a Food Writing & Tasting workshop that raises funds for local mutual aid initiatives.
