Join us for an exploration of how artists across centuries have woven forbidden themes of identity and desire into their work. Sam Waxman will analyze the subject matter, techniques, and societal constraints of Bronzino and other artists from the 15th-16th century Medici era of Florence to reveal how these artists subtly expressed homoerotic themes while creating intentional queer communities in the shadow of an oppressive regime. Drawing parallels to his own creative practice, Sam will also share examples of his photography to offer a contemporary perspective on these enduring themes. Through interactive analysis and discussion, we'll consider the connections between these historical works and today's artistic voices, highlighting how creativity flourishes even under constraint.
Living Room Lectures
Living Room Lectures aims to build community through shared learning and reflection. They offer a platform for queer people to showcase their expertise and passions.
During each event, a featured guest delivers a 20-minute lecture on a topic of their choosing, but they have to make it queer. The lecture is followed by group reflection and facilitated discussion as a means for building connections. Previous lectures have focused on acupuncture, graphic design, film, puppetry, pharmacology, reading, landscape architecture, art history, labor movements, and pornography.
Since its launch in October 2023, ten lectures have been hosted in a Brooklyn living room with over 200 attendees. The success of these intimate gatherings has inspired the creation of a public event to increase accessibility for a broader audience.
