Hello goblins and ghouls,
In this class students will learn the basics of the free 3D modeling program Blender. This class will teach you how to work “cleanly” in Blender and lean into the wacky aesthetics of 3D tools.
All students will leave this class with a working understanding of Blender (and a unique monster of their own design).
Learning Outcomes
- A "clean" workflow in blender
- Identifying and solving common problems within blender as a tool
- Lighting techniques
- 3D object exporting
Syllabus
We will be introducing the basic tools of Blender and learning how they can be applied in character creation.
Week 1
Students will work together to create a scene using basic tools. Students will begin building a rough version of their monsters.
Week 2
We will go over students’ questions that came up as they worked, dive into more advanced tools (like unwrapping, texturing, and sculpting), and explore how to identify and solve common problems.
Week 3
We will finish our monsters, adjust lighting, and finally export them as images. Instructor Brendan Page will answer questions that came up over the last week, and students will show their creations to the class.
Instructor Bio
Brendan Page is a designer, 3D artist, and printer living in the Detroit metro area. He is a recent graduate from Cranbrook Academy of Art’s 2D Design program and runs Each and Every Press, a Risograph printing studio, with his partner Rosa Novak. His independent work largely utilizes unconventional tools like photogrammetry software and wrestling video games to create books. These publications examine the questions raised about the act of copying when we use technology to reflect the real world back at ourselves.
He has collaborated with many artists to design and produce art books through Each and Every and has worked with groups like Dublab, The Wild Honey Pie, and Forum Gallery to produce design systems that forefront creativity and playfulness. He regularly teaches donation-based 3D modeling classes for beginners using the free modeling software Blender. You can find him at @ok.great on Instagram.

- Cannot independently afford the class at list price
- Share our value of intentional community
The number of selected applicants chosen is subject to the discretion of Index and the instructor, but every course will select at least one. Apply for a scholarship here. Applications close September 30th.
