Image and video content consume so much of the internet’s visual real-estate. Together we’ll discuss techniques for designing and building media-rich experiences that load fast, cost less, use less energy, are SEO-optimized, and genuinely delight users!

This workshop is intended for intermediate web/mobile developers as well as UI/UX designers who are interested in how things get built.

We’ll discuss development implementation details that may be less important for designers, and design strategies that maybe be less important for developers. That said, the techniques outlined are relevant to both disciplines and especially useful when collaborating in cross-disciplinary teams. We recommend it to anybody working on the modern web.

Program

We’ll examine some popular websites together to get an understand of how images and videos are delivered on the modern web.

We’ll discuss the pros and cons of different image formats (.jpg, .png, .gif, .svg, .webp, etc) and when to use which.

We’ll discuss content delivery networks (CDNs) and learn how to use them. We’ll look at popular content management systems (CMSs), how CDNs integrate with them, and how to create the best experience for content editors and end-users.

We’ll discuss advanced HTML and CSS features such as:

  • lazy-load,
  • defer,
  • src-set
  • <Picture/> tags

that allow us to fine-tune our image and media assets.

We’ll discuss techniques for designing around the constraints of high-resolution media and how designers and developers can work together to create the best products.

We’ll leave time for general discussion, Q&A, and sharing experiences!
