During this workshop on social practice art and design, we will investigate the opportunities, considerations, and challenges of making art and practicing design in service of immediacy, mutual aid, and resource distribution within specific communities. What aspects of your relationship to your community/communities show up in your creative practice? What changes can you make with and within the communities you belong to? What might that look like this year? What about in 5, 10, or 20 years from now?

The workshop ends with the cooking and assembling of meals to share with each other in the space, and for our unhoused and food insecure neighbors.

Learning Outcomes

  • Create personal reflections about what socially-engaged art and design means to you and how this may influence your creative practice, particularly within the communities you belong to.
  • Find inspiration and ideas about what opportunities exist for you to initiate or engage in community-centered and community-driven change, no matter how big or small
  • Envision what the future of your community/communities may look like that feel energizing, generative, and hopeful
  • Learn to make food to share with neighbors, community members, or strangers who are unhoused and experiencing food insecurity

Schedule

The beginning of class will be for self introductions and reflections to prompts around community-engaged art and design. We will spend around an hour and a half to work through design exercises to generate potential ideas for creating art or designing an intervention that is community-centered/led. We will close out by assembling of meals to share with each other in the space, and for our unhoused and food insecure neighbors.
