Dandelion, or Taraxacum officinale, is one of the most recognizable flowers on the planet. Bane of suburban homeowners’ existence, they reproduce prolifically, serving as a cheerful reminder that no pesticide regime can keep a good medicinal weed down.
In the inaugural session of Plant Club, together with herbalist Jess Turner, you’ll criss-cross continents to explore the culinary, phytochemical and cultural significance of this ubiquitous Asteraceae family member, bolstering your knowledge of the wild abundant herbs that call NYC home.
Jess will share Dandelion recipes, libation and tincture, guiding attendees through safe foraging strategies for a plant once described in a guidebook from Central Park’s inception as “making the lawns in places like green lakes reflecting heaven sown with stars.”
Description
Plant Club is a bimonthly (once every two months) deep-dive with a single medicinal plant ally, perfect for those who want to build kinship with medicinal herbs–and the more-than-human world in general.
During each session Jess Turner will guide Plant Club attendees through the lore, history, habitat and healing properties of a featured medicinal herb, alongside the organ systems to which it has an affinity. Each plant is chosen with consideration for seasonality and the challenges our bodies may face during that time.
Through this offering, you’ll refine your ability to see everyday plants—medicinal weeds, healing fruits and tried-and-true herbs alike—with new eyes. You will be empowered to fully utilize bioregional herbs, gaining a deeper connection to the living world.
Future Plant Club dates: Wednesday 6/19, 8/21, 10/16 and 12/18

Facilitator Bio
Jess Turner is a Black, Brooklyn-based herbalist, master naturalist and educator whose practice is centered on helping people develop connection to the land and plants growing most abundantly around them. In cities, these plants are often discarded as mere weeds.
Jess is interested in exploring the liberatory struggles of the plants and people whom capitalism alienates and building bridges between human and more-than-human worlds. She cultivates more than 50 species of medicinal herbs on her Hudson, NY farm plot, formulating these buds, leaves and roots into seasonal blends she sends members of her herbal CSA, entering its 3rd year in 2024.
