Our friends and partners at Seaborne join us for a collective reading and guided discussion of excerpts from A Planet to Win: Why We Need a Green New Deal by Kate Aronoff, Alyssa Battistoni, Daniel Aldana Cohen and Thea Riofrancos.
Since the 2016 election, the “Green New Deal” has become a catchall for environmental policy in the US. Inspired by the tremendous effort of FDR’s federal government to lift the United States out of the Great Depression, the Green New Deal is an attempt to call policymakers to arms with a similarly urgent task: To mobilize a united front combatting climate change at every scale.
But these three words, green new deal, have since become watered down by political apathy and transformed into a catchall for pie-in-the-sky climate policy. What really is the Green New Deal? Who is it for? And how will our lives be affected?
In this session, we’ll use the text to frame a collective understanding of the Green New Deal, and unpack what it means to us at a personal, cultural, and societal level.
Sustainability consultancy Seaborne (http://seaborne.nyc) works to help modern businesses measure and mitigate their environmental impact. With a unique lens on the complicated relationship between commerce and climate, Seaborne will lead a discussion about a future in which a Green New Deal could live up to its mighty name, and permeate our lives in meaningful and material ways.
No need to read ahead, just come with yourself, a copy of the text, and an open mind.
