Do you have questions about recycling and how it really works? Are you a designer who works on packaging, or just interested in sustainability in general? Let’s go straight to the source for answers—touring a recycling facility in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Here are the types of questions we can ask:

  • Should you take the caps off products or leave the lids on?
  • What numbers of plastic are better or worse?
  • How does PCR (post consumer recycled) work, and what’s its lifecycle?
  • Aluminum and glass can both be recycled indefinitely, but does printing on or coating the materials change that?
  • Can you recycle cartons if they have foil stamping?
  • What about cardboard shippers if they have shipping labels with adhesive?

NOTE! This event is scheduled for the day before Thanksgiving. Please make sure you’re aware of this before signing up!

Schedule

We’ll meet at Sunset Park Materials Recovery Facility (SMR) for our in-person tour at the Recycling Education Center. The tour will be focused on how recycling various materials works, and we’ll get answers to all our questions about what kinds of packaging are actually “sustainable.” After, we can get tacos!

About SMR: The facility opened in December 2013 and processes the majority of New York City’s commingled curbside material.

Situated on an 11-acre pier, the Sunset Park MRF is the largest and most sophisticated plant for commingled residential recyclables in North America.
