The Meissner 9-1065 is a model of vinyl lathe cutter from the late 1940s which can both play and cut audio directly onto blank records. Attendees of the workshop will be given access to one of these machines to make lo-fi records of their own, either using digital audio files or by recording live via a built-in microphone.

You will learn the basics of operating a lathe machine, and can cut up to 6 minutes of audio onto 7” plastic records. The machine produces recordings that lack fidelity, but bring a warm distortion and vintage effect to the sound.

Examples of audio files you could turn into records:

  • A compilation of voicenotes
  • A song or poem you have written
  • A heartfelt message for a friend
  • An AI-generated voice reciting The Gettysburg Address
  • The sound of your toddler speaking, or your dog barking, or your grandma singing

This event is not intended to make professional-grade recordings! The sound is distorted, the audio volume is lowered noticeably due to the cutting process, and the records, which are made of plastic, eventually wear down with repeated plays. The aim is simply to create small delights.

Records cost $20 per person, quantities limited.

Required Materials

Either a digital audio file (6min maximum, mp4 format), or a good sense of what you would like to record live via microphone.
